Meet the Team – Michael Dellapi

Name: Michael Dellapi

Role: Level Designer/Outreach

About: Games have been something I hold near and dear to me ever since I first beat my dad in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai for the Gamecube. I still haven’t lost but that’s besides the point. I’m currently studying at NYU majoring in Game Design, so most of the projects I have done were mainly for school. GalaCollider is easily the largest project I have ever worked on. I found out about GalaCollider through an email sent to the school and was immediately interested in what the game sent out to do. Starting out, I tried to learn as much as I could about each role. Presently, I am working on level design for the single-player scenarios which allows me to act as a sort of intermediary between the development and creative writing teams. As a writer and game designer, this is a dream come true.

What’s your favorite thing about GalaCollider?

There is a lot I like about GalaCollider but I think what makes it stand out the most for me is the incredible team I’m able to work with. Although I have only been a part of the team for a short time, I have gotten the opportunity to interact with some amazingly talented and passionate individuals. There is a strong sense of vision shared between everyone here and I love being a part of that.

What inspires you?

I’m most inspired by anything that can make me laugh. Comedy has always been something that I held very close to me, and I try to bring it into everything I do. Being able to connect people with the side of them that’s nonsensical and carefree is unbelievably important, so I cherish whatever can do the same for me.

What is your current gaming obsession?

I really enjoy MOBAs primarily because I like trying out every single character in a roster to see which one(s) I enjoy the most, and lately I have been absolutely obsessed with Dota 2. Coming from League of Legends and Heroes of the Storm, I was blown away by the sheer depth of Dota and find myself constantly learning. Aside from that, Cosmic Encounter is and will probably always be the one game I am the most obsessed with. It never fails to put a smile on my face.

Meet the Team – Emily Teng

Name: Emily Teng

Role: Creative Writer & QA Tester

About: Writer of sci-fi/fantasy, competitive rower, and game addict. I graduated from Texas A&M University with a BA in Creative Writing and Psychology. I’ve been a tester in the game industry for two years for Nintendo and Microsoft (Xbox). GalaCollider is my first opportunity at getting more involved in the creation aspect of games–namely, writing. So far, I’ve been loving every second of it.

What’s your favorite thing about GalaCollider?

I love the complexity of the gameplay and how the game lore gets folded into absolutely every aspect of the game. I’m especially eager to see how the story develops going forward!

What inspires you?

I’m actually having a pretty tough time answering this question, but if I had to say, it would probably be other writers. There’s nothing quite like being in a group with fellow writers, everything sharing ideas and critiquing stories and infecting each other with your passion for writing.

What is your current gaming obsession?

It’s still in alpha right now, but I’m definitely looking forward to We Happy Few. From what I’ve seen, it looks really, really fascinating and really, really unnerving. I can’t wait until it’s released!

The uniqueness, blending cards with “RTS” style game play.

Meet the Team – Antoine Van Lierde

Name: Antoine Van Lierde

Role: Sound Designer

About: All-around audio guy from Belgium. I do sound effects, music, mixing, mastering and in-game implementation. I started recording music when I was a teenager and then studied audio production at SAE London. While finishing my degree I learnt basic coding to build a musical controller. This project led me to work in different fields and I continued composing on the side. About a year before I discovered GalaCollider, I decided to start doing what I love full-time. I was a finalist in the Montreal international film scoring competition (2016), I created music for fashion videos and I learnt interactive scoring for games with Berklee online. I love having both creative and technical processes in my everyday life and game audio gives me just the right balance. I love all music that I feel expresses authentic emotion, and my favorite game is Hyper Light Drifter. I’m also currently working as sound designer and composer on a story-driven psychologic horror game called The Breaker.

What’s your favorite thing about GalaCollider?

What makes it special to me is a combination of different things. The hybrid genre. Playing cards to make things spawn in space. The resources system. The epic destiny of different species in galaxies that are on a collision course.

What inspires you?

Imaginary worlds, artworks, stories, characters, locations, and the symbolic meaning they carry which can be expressed through sound and music.

What is your current gaming obsession?

Nier Automata. I love the experience, the story and how it unfolds.

Meet the Team – Jason Ayers

Name: Jason Ayers

Role: Art Producer / HR Manager

About: I’ve been playing video games since I could hold a controller. My dad had an Atari Pong console with paddles connected to it that only played different versions of Pong.  Now, I’m a huge PC game fan.  I always wanted to be a part of a video game team, but I knew my skills weren’t aligned with creating games. I decided to pursue a Business Administration degree and perfect what I am naturally skilled at. Recently, I realized I still wanted to merge what I’m good at with what I like to do in my free time (absolutely anything concerning gaming) and was lucky enough to find GalaCollider.

What’s your favorite thing about GalaCollider?

GalaCollider, the game, is absolutely amazing.  I’m especially fond of the depth of strategy and style (art and sound). Honestly though, my favorite part of our game is the awesome worldwide team I get to collaborate with on a daily basis, we have a group of super talented people contributing to this game.

What inspires you?

Competition and striving to being the best is what inspires me.  I want anyone I work or play with to know that I’ll do everything I can to support them so that we all succeed.

What is your current gaming obsession?

Oh, this could be a long list, I play almost everything!  I have to start with my favorite series of all time, the Witcher.  I highly recommend all 3 games.

I recently got my hands on an HTC Vive, which blows my mind every time I put it on.

I try to get in games of Hearthstone, Duelyst, and League of Legends whenever I can.

Meet the Team – Scott Dunroe

Name: Scott Dunroe

Role: Community Manager

About: I originally come from an online marketing background but have always had a keen interest in online communities for as long as I can remember. Prior to this role with GalaCollider, I had helped to grow and manage one of Google’s business communities for two years; while also being one of Google’s Top Contributors for a good number of years now. One of my true passions has also resided with gaming though, which is why I turned my attention to looking for roles on Indie DB. My search was successful and I’ve been fortunate enough to be working with the rest of the GalaCollider team since 2016!

What’s your favorite thing about GalaCollider?

The combination of deck-building with tabletop mechanics is something that caught my attention immediately; I’m a big fan of games that aren’t scared to try something different. Throw the sci-fi theme into the mix and it was almost a love at first sight situation!

What inspires you?

It’s often the passion and enthusiasm shared by the people around me. The GalaCollider team are an amazing group with some great ideas and skills between them. It is also really nice to see the public becoming excited about the development of GalaCollider via our social channels.

What is your current gaming obsession?

Work keeps me busy so I’ve recently been trying to stick to games that can be played in shorter sessions. Rocket League and a lesser known game called Atlas Reactor have got me hooked at the moment.

Meet the Team – Jess Haskins

Name: Jess Haskins

Role: Creative Writer

About: I’m a game designer and writer in Brooklyn, NY specializing in interactive storytelling, worldbuilding, and narrative design. Among the projects I’ve worked on is Muse Games’ multiplayer online steampunk airship shooter Guns of Icarus Online, for which I did all the writing and worldbuilding (as well as design, community, and a few other things). I’m also involved with a few local community groups, including co-chairing the IGDA NYC chapter and hosting a monthly drink night for NYC Indie Games. That’s where I met Sebastian during the brief period he was living in NYC—just long enough to get introduced and to get onboard with GalaCollider!

What’s your favorite thing about GalaCollider?

I was immediately impressed by the scope of the in-game universe and commitment to thoughtful, engaging, sometimes subtle storytelling in a multiplayer strategy game. Four billion years in the future is a pretty audacious setting. It’s a fun challenge to imagine the diversity and multiplicity of civilizations and cultures that could exist in such a remote context, while still making the factions, characters, and items players will encounter relatable and compelling.

What inspires you?

When I dig into a new project I like to start with research grounded in the real world. On GalaCollider, there’s no shortage of astronomical references to turn to for inspiration: star maps, timelines of evolution, simulations of galactic collisions, theories about alternate forms of life, the history of the universe since the Big Bang. I like to read science magazines like New Scientist and Nautilus, which are a great source of ideas. On a more narrative level, I always come back to Star Trek, with its rosy vision of space exploration and the future progress of humanity. For a somewhat grittier take on the rise and fall of galactic civilizations, the nature of technology, and the origin of life, the Battlestar Galactica reboot had some intriguing ideas and big themes (even if they were making up the plot as they went along). In games, the Mass Effect series earns a special place as great space opera with epic scope, meticulous worldbuilding, and sensitive and compelling character drama, including a touch of humor.

What is your current gaming obsession?

While I put off deciding which RPG series I want to spend the next several hundred hours immersed in (Wasteland, Fallout, or Baldur’s Gate?), I’ve been playing a bunch of point-and-click adventures (LucasArts classics like Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and The Dig), and catching up on recent Telltale series (up next: Game of Thrones, or maybe Tales from the Borderlands).

Meet the Team – Madeleine Gray

Name: Madeleine Gray

Role: Creative Writer

About: Recent graduate of the University of California, San Diego (class of 2016). I like snowboarding, yoga, pretty much every film by Studio Ghibli, animals of all sizes, and, of course, video games. Games have shaped who I am today. I love the lore and worlds of games like World of Warcraft, The Elder Scrolls, and Mass Effect. When I stumbled across GalaCollider, I was immediately intrigued by its lore and the vastness of the game’s universe, and knew I had to be a part of the team.

What’s your favorite thing about GalaCollider?

The lore, and the scope of what the team wants to accomplish!

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by people who always chase their dreams, break down boundaries, and love what they do.

What is your current gaming obsession?

Undertale. I would also like to learn how to DM for Dungeons & Dragons!

Meet the Team – Robert Miedema and Richard Simms

Robert Miedema

Role: Senior Marketing Specialist

About: I’ve been working in the gaming industry for quite some time now. I work for a game studio in the Netherlands that has developed and published a variety of platforms such as: PC, consoles, mobile, handhelds and most recently: VR games. I read about GalaCollider on IndieDB, where I saw a topic that the team was looking for someone to help out with the marketing of the game. I visited the website, watched a movie about the game and instantly fell in love! I decided to wait no longer and shoot an email over to the team, which eventually led to me joining the team in a marketing role!

What’s your favorite thing about GalaCollider?: Due to the fact I recently joined the team, I tend to love everything about it. So far I don’t have one favorite thing as of yet, but I’ll let you all know when I have mastered the game!

What inspires you?: Since I was a young dude I was already obsessed with gaming. My father brought home a Nintendo, which led to more Nintendo consoles, PlayStation consoles and eventually a XBOX. When I got older I decided that I wanted to do this for a living, since working in the games industry has so many awesome perks and benefits. Being in touch with the latest technology, making international connections everywhere and experiencing awesome stories by playing games. Making something for the world to enjoy and to connect everyone together, that is what inspires me.

What is your current gaming obsession?: I’m currently playing a lot of Royal Revolt II on my mobile device, which is an awesome game to play while I commute to my work. On my XBOX I tend to play a lot of Battlefield, but I am looking forward to playing ‘The Division’ which will be released in March 2016! I mostly play games with some friends that live close to my place, so we often organize LAN events at which we play so many old and new games!

I’ve worked previously on RetroFish (in development) as a QA Tester, sound designer, and composer.

What’s your favorite thing about GalaCollider?: I really like the combination of cards, table-top gaming, and a fully 3D map. It feels like the perfect step forward for gaming.

What inspires you?: Nobuo Uematsu (植松 伸夫), a man who basically stumbled into game composing and yet gave us “One Winged Angel”.

What is your current gaming obsession?: In general, I’m always obsessed with JRPGs. I cracked out my old PSP and started finishing Final Fantasy IX and Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky.

Currently, I’m 100%ing Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. Also, I hate the stupid leopard tortoise.
